thoughts on habits

I've heard that it takes two weeks to replace a habit with a new habit. But what if you had a habit and drop it and then try to get it back? I think it takes longer than two weeks.

Walked again today. Found some nice routes through my neighborhood. Not driving to get to the walking is a good thing, with $4.00/gallon gas, nowhutImean, Vern? Three miles. It doesn't seem like a lot. But when I consider where I started, I know that even if I do nothing but walk three miles every day between now and September I'm going to be a lot better off than if I hadn't.

Short post tonight, it's late and I'm sleepy.

Oh. My. Gosh.

Do my knees ever hurt. But I feel better than I have in quite some time.

I walked my longest training walk yet today - six miles. Yikes. It doesn't sound like a lot, particularly when I realize that the actual event will be ten times that long (talk about yikes), but it's an accomplishment. It was a struggle at first; the first couple of miles were tough. About at the 2.5 mile mark, I hit what's known as "The ZONE"....I felt like I could walk to the moon at that point.

Well, along about the five-mile point, I was fading fast. Running out of gas, big-time. I toughed it out, thanks to the fact that I did have a walking partner today (thanks, Barry!) and had done a proper training walk for the first time. A proper training walk, you ask? I'll tell you: a proper training walk includes pit stops at the same approximate intervals as the actual walk, as well as some resting and stretching and rehydrating. Thanks to the Burger King in Royal Oak I was able to refill the water bottle, and even add some ice. Boy, did that feel nice. Although I had to giggle that I rattled as I walked for the next half-hour or so.

Looking back, I can really see that I've made progress. I've come so far; it hasn't been that long since I would not have been able to walk six miles, let alone feel this good afterwards. Yes, my knees hurt, but they're going to be just fine in the morning. And so will I.

Probably walking without a parnter for a while...

My previous walking buddy doesn't want to walk inside :( I don't want to walk outside when it's hot and humid; it'll just make me want to quit faster.

So, back to the mall it was today. Did four fast miles, and then went grocery shopping. Took a few minutes to work the kinks out after I had walked four miles then sat in the car for a few minutes.

BUT...compared to the first few days I walked, when I couldn't even get out of the car afterwards, this is a huge improvement. I'm making progress, I can feel it! My knees are getting better and it's even easier to do stairs. I'm not pushing it on the stairs thing. But it's nice to be able to do them when I have to.

No more Slacker

No more excuses. I have to keep this up; that's the whole point. If I don't document this stuff I let myself slide on all of it, so I'm not going to do that anymore.

Been walking outside, which is really great. Great, that is, until it gets to be NINETY degrees outside, which it is going to be today. Ugh. I always say that I'd rather be too warm than too cold, and it's true, but it's kind of like the choice between a sprained ankle and a root canal. I'd really most prefer to not have either extreme. But if it has to be one or the other, I'll take hot. I'm just not going to walk in it; I'll hit the mall again and walk inside.

I suppose I should train some for heat, since odds are fairly good that in September in Michigan it could be pretty warm. I hope it's not, of course, but it could be. I think that just training at all is a good thing, and I'll leave the weather to the gods.

Ok. No step count today, but when I walk again I'll post it. Today's a cross-training day, so out comes the yoga DVD.
